Seven autograph manuscript letters, signed, discussing work, arranging a lecture, and personal matters. Includes letters to: J. W. Hasbrouck, Dr. David Francis Bacon, B. F. Ransom, and R. O. Williams. The letter from B. F. Ransom is from the Daggett Autograph Collection.

Abstract:

Missionary and teacher in Singapore, 1835-1844. Correspondence, a journal covering his years in Singapore, genealogical notes, a Malay lexicon and a Chinese-English vocabulary. Principal correspondents are Lyman Beecher, Horace Dickinson, Mercy Amelia Dickinson, Horace Greeley, Edward Everett Hale, Mary Ann Moseley Dickinson Perkins, and Lebbeus B. Ward.

Miscellaneous autographs and letters of American political and cultural figures, among them John and John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Jefferson Davis, Horace Greeley, and Lydia Sigourney. Also included are eleven letters to James F. Babcock, editor of the New Haven Weekly Palladium, on politics (1840-1866) and seven letters (1866-1872) to R. P. Cowles in New Haven from prospective lecturers.

Abstract: Materials relating to the Civil War including correspondence of military leaders on both sides, military documents, commissions, orders, inventories and administrative records, and private correspondence of important figures in the war. There are also letters from soldiers in the field and citizens viewing the progress of the war. A set of nineteen posters with 112 bust portraits depicting identified men and women, primarily authors, artists, scientists, monarchs, and religious and political leaders from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with a group of idealized heads illustrating characteristics identified by phrenologists.

Abstract: The major figure in these papers is Russell G. Pruden who is represented by a war diary (1918-1919) and correspondence, largely from friends from Yale and the 27th U.S. Aero Squadron in which he served during World War I. His diary contains many photographs, a history of his squadron and other memorabilia. Also in the papers are fourteen letters written to his grandfather, Joseph S. Pruden by D.B. Abstract: The papers consist of nine volumes of autographed letters written by prominent American, British, and French political, financial, literary, and cultural figures. The majority of letters are addressed to Whitelaw Reid or Elizabeth Mills Reid, and date from Reid's service as ambassador to Great Britain.
