Abstract: The papers consist of correspondence, writings, legal and financial material, congressional papers, family memorabilia, and other papers of various members of the Evarts family of Vermont, Boston, and New York. The principal figures, however, are Jeremiah Evarts (1781-1831), author, editor, lawyer, and philanthropist, and his son, William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901), lawyer and statesman. Abstract: A collection of documents on the early history of Connecticut assembled by Wolcott Griswold Lane as a memorial to his father, William Griswold Lane. The original bequest consisted of approximately 1,000 letters and papers (1670-1866) of the Lane and Griswold families of Connecticut and Ohio.
