Biography

George Foster Emmons (1811-1884), appointed a United States Navy midshipman in 1828, served on the frigate Brandywine in the Mediterranean 1830-1833, served on the Peacock in the Wilkes Expedition 1838-1842, joined the ship Boston of the Brazil Squadron, and served on the Ohio as part of the Pacific Squadron. He was commissioned commodore in 1868 and spent the rest of his career on shore at the Hydrographic Office in Washington and as commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Abstract:

This collection encompasses accessions of single letters and small groups of letters and other manuscripts pertaining to the history of Alaska, which the library has chosen to group and list as an artificial collection. Letters and documents discuss travel in Alaska, interactions with Native Alaskans, the Alaska gold rush, the fur industry, surveying, business operations, and naval service. Also includes one photograph of the U.S.S. Pinta.

Scope and Contents: The George Foster Emmons Papers have been organized in five sections. The first section (WA MSS 166) consists of three manuscript journals (931 pages long) which Emmons kept while attached to the U.S. Exploring Expedition under the command of Charles Wilkes.
