The collection contains materials collected by Ronald H. Fishbein (1931-2015) related to physician Nathan Smith (1762-1829) and members of his family, notably those involved in the field of medicine. Nathan Smith was a well-known New England surgeon, teacher, and author who founded Dartmouth Medical School and co-founded the University of Vermont College of Medicine, the medical school at Bowdoin College, and the Yale School of Medicine. Collection materials include manuscripts of Nathan Smith family histories; newspaper clippings; photographs; Fishbein's correspondence with Nathan Smith authors and biographers Oliver S. Hayward and Constance Putnam; and a typescript of the article "Nathan Smith and the Johns Hopkins Connection" written by Fishbein.

Abstract

The collection contains materials collected by Ronald H. Fishbein (1931-2015) related to Nathan Smith (1762-1829) and his family. Nathan Smith was a physician, teacher, and author, who founded the Dartmouth Medical School and co-founded the Yale School of Medicine. Materials in the collection include family history manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence with Nathan Smith authors and biographers, and a typescript of an article by Fishbein.

Biographical / Historical

A surgeon and associate professor emeritus of general surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Ronald H. Fishbein graduated from the Yale School of Medicine in 1957. His publications include "Nathan Smith and the Johns Hopkins Connection" published in the Maryland Medical Journal in 1989. He passed away on January 2, 2015.
