Scope and Contents

This series consists of photographic prints from the studio of Mathew B. Brady in Washington, D.C. The photographs include studio and exterior portraits of officers serving in the military during the American Civil War; exterior views of battlefields, structures, and military units; and studio portraits of persons in the extended Brady and Handy families. The same image may exist in several subseries.

Many images created by the studio of Mathew B. Brady exist in derivative forms in Series II. Levin Corbin Handy Studio.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
