De La Democratie en Amerique

 Sub-Series
Call Number: GEN MSS 982, Series C., Sub-Series VI

Scope and Contents

In May 1954 Yale bought from Comte Jean de Tocqueville the manuscripts of De la Democratie en Amerique and all Tocqueville's notes for that work. It turned out that only "Paquet No. 9" (C.V.g.) of the notes could be found, all the rest of the ten "paquets" having disappeared since Bonnel copied them for Yale about 1930-31 (see rest of C.V.). The manuscript of Democratie turned out to be the working manuscript in Tocqueville's hand (C.VI.a.), which differs slightly from the printed text. An intermediate fair copy, in another hand but probably with Tocqueville corrections, was noted by GWP at Tocqueville in 1930-31, but has apparently since disappeared (C.VI.b.).

a. Original working manuscript of De la Democratie en Amerique (4 boxes)

b. Fair copy - possibly still in Tocqueville Tocqueville MSS. Noted by GWP in 1930-31. (The fair copy of at least one chapter is included in the original working manuscript. See C.VI.a. Box 4, for the chapter entitled "Suite des chapitres precedents")

A microfilm of C.V.g and C.VI.a was made in 1967.

The film is kept in the Beinecke Library.
