Ashbery painted this piece at the Southampton home of his friend, the painter and poet Fairfield Porter.
"Mantlepiece" was included in the Literary Vision show at the Jack Tilton Gallery that ran from
November 1-26, 1988, and which focused on visual artwork by writers. The exhibition
catalogue pairs reproductions of visual art with short prose pieces by the writers, and includes
a black and white reproduction of Ashbery's painting with an untitled prose text by him.

Access Information
