Biographical / Historical

Jean-François Bory (1938- ) is a French poet, writer, visual artist, and filmmaker whose avant-garde oeuvre centers on visual poetry and sound poetry.

Born in Paris, Bory spent part of his childhood in South East Asia before returning to the French capital where he based his career. In addition to numerous collections of poems, Bory’s literary works include novels, monographs, essays, and articles of literary criticism.

The year 1966 marked Bory’s first exhibits of visual poetry in London, Milan, and Venice. Two years later he participated in the pioneering sound poetry festival Text und Aktionsabend II in Bern. In 1983, Bory joined experimental poets Eugenio Miccini, Sarenco, Julien Blaine, Paul de Vree, and Alain Arias-Misson in forming the transnational group Logomotives. As part of his editing work, Bory co-founded the Éditions Agentzia (1968-1972) with Jochen Gerz and Arthur Hubschmid, directed the literary and sociological art magazine L’Humidité (1970-1975), and has served on the editorial board of CCP - Cahier critique de poésie since 1999. In 1998, Bory and avant-garde poet Jacques Donguy co-founded the production company and multimedia magazine Son@rt.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections as they are acquired, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit. This collection received a basic level of processing, including rehousing and minimal organization. Information included in the Description of the Papers note and Collection Contents section is drawn from information supplied with the collection and from an initial survey of the contents. Folder titles appearing in the contents list below are often based on those provided by the creator or previous custodian. Titles have not been verified against the contents of the folders in all cases. Otherwise, folder titles are supplied by staff during initial processing. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
