Biographical / Historical
Martin H. M. Schreiber (1946- ) of Prague, Czechoslovakia, immigrated to the United States in 1952. In 1965, Schreiber joined the United States Army; he took up photography full time following his discharge in 1968. He has photographed for international magazines and newspapers, has exhibited in solo and group shows, and his work has been featured in published books. He also taught for a period of time at the School of Visual Arts and The New School.
In 1981, Schreiber began an 18-month journey through Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. He visited multiple ranches, riding and camping out with cowboys while on cattle drives. Photographs documenting this Western cowboy culture were published in Last of a breed: portraits of working cowboys (Austin, Texas: Texas Monthly Press, 1982), a work financed by multiple ranch owners.
