Fifteen manuscript ships’ logs, letter books, and other notes kept by William Whittemore Low while serving various assignments aboard United States Navy vessels, 1822-1876 (bulk 1841-1876).
Ships represented include the USS Franklin, USS Missouri, USS Decatur, USS Columbus, USS Portsmouth, USS Octorara, USS Oneida, USS Mohican, and USS Tennessee.
Logs for the USS Decatur and USS Portsmouth were created during the ships' patrol of the African coast to suppress the slave trade. Logs for the USS Octorara and USS Oneida were created during the ships’ use in the American Civil War.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
