Scope and Contents

Papers of Dyer White pertaining to his efforts as a lawyer, judge, and revenue collector in New Haven, Connecticut, 1785-1841. Included are 12 account books, three sets of bound stubs from application entries for stills, eight applications for licenses to retail wine, a cash book, correspondence, two ledgers, and a waste book.

Account books document White's time as a revenue collector and includes information on such matters as distilleries, auctions, snuff factories, sugar refineries, carriages, and imported provisions.

Correspondence is chiefly addressed to Dyer White but includes letters to other members of the White family.

Biographical / Historical

Dyer White (1762-1841) was a lawyer, judge, and revenue collector in New Haven, Connecticut. He founded his law firm in 1785.

White married Susannah Whittesley White (1766-1796) in 1791, Hannah Wetmore White (1773-1830) in 1801, and Eunice Pomeroy White (1777-1869) in 1832. With Hannah White, he had one son, Henry White (1803-1880).

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
