Scope and Contents

Photographs and other material related to Susannah Hays, Egypt (San Francisco: Susannah Hays, 1993) and other associated projects created from 1992 to 2008, with the bulk from the period of 1992 to 1993.

The collection includes thirteen photographs reproduced in the volume that document sites in Egypt including Abū Sunbul, Cairo, Idfū, Imbāba, and Luxor with significant documentation of the Great Temple at Abū Sunbul, the Temple of Horus at Idfū, and street photography in Cairo and Luxor.

Related material includes copy photographs of the printed volume and images therein as well as front matter specimens, in addition to associated photographic postcards documenting the project and others as well as discrete photographic portraits of Hays created by Matt Phillips in 1992 and of book designer Peter Rutledge Koch created by Hays in 1994.

Overview

Susannah Hays (born 1959)

Susannah Hays is an experimental photographer, book artist, and educator. She is known for using camera-less and historical photographic processes in her experimentation in visual media.

Hays was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mills College in 1982 and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1991 as well as a Master of Arts in Visual Studies in 2002 and doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2016 from the University of California, Berkeley.

From 1990 to 2012 Hays was the sole proprietor of Works on Paper, a paper conservation laboratory specializing in the preservation of photographs and the production of Artist's books. She was also a faculty member of the San Francisco Art Institute from 2001 to 2012.

From 1991 to 1997 she was married to artist Matt Phillips. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
