William A. "Bill" Callison (1941-2008)

William A. "Bill" Callison (1941-2008) was born in Bremerton, Washington, to Robert Callison and Ardis Zalesky Callison. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 1963 and a Master of Arts in Far East Studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965. He lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in California where he worked as an electronic technician.

In 1967, during the Vietnam War, Callison was the founding editor of The Bond, the first antiwar newspaper for soldiers. He became active with the Peace and Freedom Party of California beginning in 1974 and served as Chair of its Contra Costa County branch from approximately 2000 to 2008. In 2008, he ran for United States Congress 7th Congressional District of California.

Peace and Freedom Party

The Peace and Freedom Party (PFP), which grew out of the civil rights and anti-war movements, organized in 1967 June and achieved ballot status in California in 1968 January under the California Secretary of State Report of Registration. After 1968, PFP affiliates in most states dissolved primarily because of ballot access restrictions. The California party, however, continued to maintain enough registered voters to hold on to its ballot status and continued to contest local elections throughout the 1970s and the 1980s.
