Scope and Contents

The collection consists of scripts and film reels documenting aspects of the film and theater career of Paul Newman. Scripts include annotated typescript drafts of screenplays(annotations seem to be those of Newman) for films, including The Color of Money, that shed light on Newman's creative process as an actor and his contributions to the screenplay revision process, as well as bound typescript copies of screenplays with photographs that document the production of certain films, such as Cool Hand Luke. Also found are screenplays for films directed by Newman, including Rachel, Rachel, and scripts for plays in which he starred, including C. C. Pyle and the Bunion Derby. Film reels include recordings and outtakes related to the making of various motion pictures and the television program "The Battler," in which Newman starred.

Paul Newman (1925-2008)

Paul Newman was an award-winning actor and director who starred in over fifty major motion picture films. He graduated from the Yale School of Drama in 1954.

Donated to the Yale Drama Library by Paul Newman, 1985-1991.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.

This collection received a basic level of processing, including rehousing, organization, and description, in 2010.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
