The collection consists of material created and accumulated by Henry Adams La Farge and others in the course of researching and compiling an unpublished catalogue raisonné of works by the American artist John La Farge. Material includes descriptive text and photographic reproductions of La Farge's works in various media, including oil paintings, drawings, watercolors, glass, and engravings; extensive correspondence files relating to the provenance of works by La Farge; and research and other files consisting of lists, catalogs, slides, photographs, correspondence, notes and other material. The collection documents the scope, history, and provenance of works of art by John La Farge, as well as the process of producing a catalogue raisonné.

Abstract

The collection consists of material created and accumulated by Henry Adams La Farge and others in the course of researching and compiling an unpublished catalogue raisonné of works by the American artist John La Farge. Material includes descriptive text and photographic reproductions of La Farge's works in various media, including oil paintings, drawings, watercolors, glass, and engravings; extensive correspondence files relating to the provenance of works by La Farge; and research and other files consisting of lists, catalogs, slides, photographs, correspondence, notes and other material. The collection documents the scope, history, and provenance of works of art by John La Farge, as well as the process of producing a catalogue raisonné.

Henry Adams La Farge (1902-1985)

Henry Adams La Farge (1902-1985), grandson of the American artist John La Farge, was an art administrator, historian, and editor. He edited the book Lost Treasures of Europe: 427 Photographs (1946) and compiled a catalogue raisonné of works by John La Farge that was never published.

John La Farge (1835-1910)

Processing Information

This collection received a preliminary level of processing, including rehousing, minimal organization, and listing of contents, upon receipt by the Library. In 2007-2008, the contents list was migrated to comply with current archival descriptive standards. Further rehousing and description was carried was out in 2012.

As a rule, descriptive information found in the Collection Contents section is drawn in large part from information supplied with the collection and from an initial survey of the contents. Folder titles appearing in the contents list below are often based on those provided by the creator or previous custodian. Titles have not been verified against the contents of the folders in all cases. Otherwise, folder titles are supplied by staff during initial processing.

This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
