Scope and Contents

The Arnold Ronnebeck papers contain correspondence, manuscripts, artwork, photographs, and printed and other materials documenting the career and life of the Prussian-born artist. Correspondence in the collection includes letters from other artists, family, and organizations, and includes letters from well-known modernist-era artists, such as George Grosz, Marsden Hartley, Wassily Kandinsky, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Alfred Stieglitz. Manuscripts include notebooks, journals Ronnebeck kept while in Paris from 1910 to 1912, and loose notes. Original artwork in the collection includes lithographs and busts of Hartley. Photographs include images of Ronnebeck's sculptures and the artwork of others, images of the artist at work and with other people, and images from the war years, 1914 through 1917, such as urban and rural landscapes, architectural sites of interest, and soldiers. Printed materials include art catalogs, ephemera, and clippings, and other materials include biographical information, personal papers, and childhood sketchbooks.

Arnold Ronnebeck (1885-1947)

Arnold Ronnebeck (1885-1947), born in Nassau, Germany (then Prussia), was a modernist sculptor and lithographer. Ronnebeck studied sculpture with Aristide Maillol and Émile-Antoine Bourdelle in Paris between 1907 and 1913 and emigrated to the United States in 1923. He is best known for his lithographs of New York City in the 1920s and depictions of western life in Colorado and New Mexico from the 1920s through 1940s. He settled in Denver, Colorado and worked as an art advisor to the Denver Art Museum from 1926 to 1931.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
