Edward Rowland Sill (1841-1887)
Edward Rowland Sill, poet and teacher, was born 29 April 1841 in Windsor, Connecticut to Theodore and Elizabeth Newberry (Rowland) Sill. In 1852 Sill moved to Cleveland, Ohio with his father and, following his father's death in 1853, he went to live with his uncle, Elisha Noyes Sill, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He spent one year at Phillips Exeter Academy and one at the preparatory school of Western Reserve College in Hudson, Ohio before entering Yale (1861). After graduating, he travelled around Cape Horn to California and then worked various jobs before settling into education and teaching. He was superintendent of schools in Cuyahoga Falls (1869-1870), taught high school Classics and English in Oakland, California (1871-1874), and then held the chair of English at the University of California (1874-1882). Sill returned to Cuyahoga Falls in 1883 and died on 27 February 1887 following surgery. Posthumous publications include The Prose of Edward Rowland Sill (1900) and The Poems of Edward Rowland Sill (1902).
