Scope and Contents

The collection includes manuscripts, typescripts and proofs of books, essays, and plays including Aubrey Beardsley, The Splendid Wayfaring, and The Three Students; original and proofs of illustrations, bookplates, and cover art; correspondence; and contracts with publishers. The majority of the correspondence consists of Macfall's outgoing letters to Earl E. Fisk, a British-born book collector, anthologist and insurance agent who lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and assisted Macfall in placing his books with American publishers.

The Haldane Macfall Collection is the physical property of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. Literary rights, including copyright, belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns. For further information, consult the appropriate curator.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The majority of the collection was purchased on the Francis O. Matthiessen Fund, 1956. Other items were the gifts of Mrs. Leon Godchaux, 1948, and E. L. Sampter, 1956.
