Anthony Trollope collection

Scope and Contents

The Anthony Trollope Collection consists of six autograph manuscript novels or parts of novels, a commonplace book, and two letters by Anthony Trollope. The collection spans the years 1835-[1940?], but most of the material dates from Trollope's adult life, 1835-1881. The collection is housed in six boxes and is organized into two series: Writings and Other Papers.

Series I, Writings , consists of the novels Can You Forgive Her?, with autograph corrections by Trollope; The Last Chronicle of Barset, with corrections by Trollope; Ayala's Angel, half in the hand of Florence Bland, Trollope's niece, with portions of chapters 39 and 41 and the whole of chapter 40 lacking; Cousin Henry, chapters 1-24, half in the hand of Florence Bland; Dr. Wortle's School, half of it dictated to Mrs. Trollope or to Florence Bland; Harry Heathcote of Gangoil, Christmas Story for the Graphic; and Sir Harry Hotspur of Humblethwaite. There is also a manuscript outline and notes, in Trollope's handwriting, for his unfinished novel, The Landleaguers.

Series II, Other Papers , consists of a two volume commonplace book containing notes on books he has read, each volume carrying his signature and the date, August 1835. Also in the series is a letter to C. Collins, dated 1879 Apr 14, and a photostat copy of a letter to G. C. Cornwall about the practicability of extending free postal delivery in rural areas, dated 1857 Apr 18.

Opening Hours

Access Information

The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
