Series I: Correspondence, 1806-1818, 1822-1849, (1850-1930), 1931-1948, 1964
Scope and Contents
CORRESPONDENCE is divided into two subsections, "Beecher-Scoville Family Correspondence" and "Correspondence of Others."
"Beecher-Scoville Family Correspondence" is arranged alphabetically by name. Correspondence grouped under family names (Beecher Family, Foote Family, etc.) has been further divided by the name of the individual family members. An individual's correspondence is listed apart from the family group if the individual is generally well-known or if there is a large quantity of correspondence. (Note, however, that Lyman Beecher's correspondence has been filed under Beecher Family.)
For each family member, the correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the author of the letter or, in the case of letters addressed to non-family members, alphabetically by the name of the person to whom the letter is addressed. (Letters to other family members will be found under the name of the recipient.)
*The correspondence of Henry Ward Beecher is a notable exception to this arrangement. All letters, whether to or from H. W. B., are filed together alphabetically by the name of the correspondent. Thus all correspondence which he had with members of the Beecher-Scoville family is to be found under his name, whether he was the recipient or not.
"Correspondence of Others" is arranged alphabetically by the name of the family member to whom the correspondence refers, followed by correspondence which does not refer to specific members of the Beecher-Scoville family.
