Series Part IV, III: Campaigns for Senatorial Nomination and Congress, 1958

Call Number: MS 628, Series Part IV, III

Scope and Contents

Part IV, Series III. is a subject file dealing with Bowles' unsuccessful attempt to gain the Democratic nomination for Senator from Connecticut and with his successful campaign for the House of Representatives against Horace Seely-Brown, in Connecticut's Second Congressional District. Materials in this section include memoranda on campaign strategy, publicity, press releases, background material on opponents and on the Congressional District, lists, schedules, and financial records. Some of the background materials seem to be from the files of Douglas J. Bennet, Sr., Bowies' friend who ran against Seely-Brown in the 1956 election. Other sources of information on the campaign include the correspondence in Part IV, Series I. and the clippings in Part IV, Series V. An important memorandum of Bowles' reminiscences on why he lost the senatorial nomination will be found with the diaries and oral histories in Part IX.
