This collection consists of six items relating to Albert Dodd. The first is a diary kept by Dodd while at Yale College (1836-1837) describing his love for both men and women; the second an album of his poetry, with printed engravings of Hoboken and Manhattanville. There are three letters to his family from Bloomington, Illinois (1841-1844), whither he had gone to practice law. Overview
Diary kept by Albert Dodd while at Yale College (1836-1837) describing his relations with men and women, a manuscript of his poetry (with printed engravings of Hoboken and Manhattanville), and three letters to his family from Bloomington, Illinois (1841-1844) where he had gone to practice law. The letters describe modes of travel, hunting, the habits of wolves, and conditions of health and hygiene in the area. Included also is Dodd's obituary from the Hartford Daily Times, June 1844.
Biographical / Historical
Born about 1818; entered college from Hartford, Conn.; joined the class at the beginning of Senior year, or perhaps a little earlier, from Washington (now Trinity) College. After graduation, he studied law and opened an office for its practice at St. Louis, Mo. He subsequently removed to Bloomington, Ill.; contemplated marriage; took an active part in politics; and had promising prospects before him. Returning from attendance on a political meeting, he attempted to cross the Mackinaw River, about twenty miles from his home, while the stream was swollen by a freshet. His horse lost his footing, and Mr. Dodd was drowned, June, 1844, being about 26 years of age.
