Allis family papers

 Collection
Call Number: MS 1368
Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, diaries, bills, recepits, legal papers, genealogical notes, and miscellanea concerning the Allis family of New Haven, Connecticut, and members of the Colton, Stockbridge, and Foote families, 1840-1895.

Papers concerning personal finances, 1840-1895, consitute the bulk of the collection. These include miscellaneous bills and receipts of Joseph Colton, and papers concerning the stock investments, and debts, of Salmon White Allis and his widow Emily Colton. Other materials include childhood diaries, 1849-1850, of Gertrude Allis; and letters to Joseph Colton from family and friends. There is little or nothing concerning Colton's military career or his work as a merchant; most of his papers date from the last years of his life.

The papers were given to the Yale Library by the Yale University Treasurer's Office in 1942. A few papers concern a scholarship fund established at the Divinity School in 1890, in acordance with Emily Colton's will, in memory of her son Henry W. Allis (d. 1841), a member of the Yale College class of 1844.
