Scope and Contents

The papers consist of correspondence from Dorothy Hadley Bayen to her sister, Leora Hadley, and deal primarily with her daily life in Ethiopia. Letters from Addis Ababa describe aggressive action by Italy against Ethiopia. One letter discusses the attempt of Dorothy and her husband to raise money for the Haile Selassie Fund while visiting New York. A newspaper clipping of the wedding announcement is included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Dorothy Hadley, an Evanston, Illinois resident and daughter of a waterworks laborer, graduated from Evanston High School. She attended Northwestern University before transferring to Howard University in Washington, D.C. She met Prince Malaku Bayen, a medical student at Howard University and nephew of Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia. The couple married in 1931. Upon graduation, they moved to Ethiopia where the prince became personal physician to his uncle.
