Biographical / Historical
John Collins Pope was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 4, 1904. He acquired both his undergraduate (B.A., 1925) and graduate (Ph.D., 1931) degrees from Yale University and taught in the Yale English Department from 1928 to 1971. Pope distinguished himself by working out the metrical patterns of Old English poetry, making it possible to hear how this poetry was delivered in its original setting. Pope also authored and edited many scholarly works on Old English and educated generations of scholars of Old English and Edmund Spenser. John Collins Pope died in New Haven, Connecticut on April 18, 1997 at the age of 93.
