Abstract

The papers consist of an unpublished manuscript, written by William P. Bundy between 1969-1972, on the Vietnam War, particularly decisions made by American government officials in the 1960s.

Biographical / Historical

William P. Bundy was born September 24, 1917 in Washington D.C. He graduated with an A.B. from Yale University in 1939, and an M.A. (1940) and an LL.B (1947) from Harvard University. He served with the United States Signal Corps, European theater, from 1941 to 1946. Thereafter, he worked for ten years with the Central Intelligence Agency before joining the Kennedy administration as deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs from 1961 to 1963, and assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs from November 1963 to 1964. He served as assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs from 1964 to 1969. After he left the state department, he was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, served on the Council on Foreign Relations, and was editor of Foreign Affairs from 1972 to 1984.
