The papers mostly consist of entries from William Winter Dean's diaries, and original letters written by him to various family members, particularly covering his years in the United States Army during World War I. There is also a notebook of letter transcripts, photocopies of photographs, and biographical information on Dean prepared by his two daughters.

Biographical / Historical
William Winter Dean was born on July 5, 1895, in St. Paul, Minnesota. After attending public schools in St. Paul, and the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Dean attended Yale University and graduated in 1917 from the Sheffield Scientific School. That same year he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. After promotion to first lieutenant, Dean captained a machine gun battalion in France until the end of World War I. He was twice wounded and received several medals for bravery. After the war he worked in St. Paul as a businessman and married Jane Ernest. They had two daughters. William Winter Dean died in 1929.
