Biographical / Historical
Milton Bulkley was born on July 14, 1840, in Southport Connecticut. He graduated from Yale in 1861. Due to declining health after graduation, he was advised to take a sea voyage. In late 1862 he travelled by sea from New York to San Francisco. California suited him, and he remained there as a member of the firm, Sherwood, Bulkley & Company, shipping and commission merchants. His health began to decline again in 1866. In 1868 he married Kate A. Wheaton. They had one son. He died in San Francisco on January 25, 1872.
