Scope and Contents
The papers of A. V. Williams Jackson, professor of Indo-Iranian languages at Columbia University (1895-1935), consist of notes and drafts for articles and speeches, many of which were subsequently published. The primary topics are Sanskrit and Avestan grammar and literature and the cultures of India and Iran. Several writings on Classical and western literature are also included. The final items in the collection are a program for the Joint Meetings of the Philological Societies of the United States (1894), with some related materials.
The writings are arranged in chronological order.

Biographical / Historical
A. V. Williams Jackson was born in New York City, on February 9, 1862. For the majority of his life, Jackson was associated with Columbia University. He received an A.B. there in 1883, an A.M. the following year, an L.H.D. the year after that, and in 1886, a Ph.D. Between 1895 and 1935, he was a professor of Indo-Iranian languages at Columbia. He was the author of many books and travelled extensively in the Near East and South Asia. A. V. Williams Jackson died on August 8, 1937.
