Scope and Contents

Correspondence, receipts, financial papers, military orders, a diary for the year 1813, and other papers of John Stites Gano, Major-General in the Ohio Militia and a figure in the Western battles of the War of 1812. The papers are chiefly military in nature, though there are some personal items. Included are letters to and from Gov. Return Jonathan Meigs, Stephen Gano, the noted clergyman and brother of J.S. Gano, and letters to General William Henry Harrison.

Biographical / Historical

One of the original settlers of Columbus, Ohio; fought in the Indian Wars in 1791; appointed ensign of a company in New York City in 1787; major in the First Regiment of Militia of Hamilton County in 1792, and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1797; Major General of the First Division of the Militia of Ohio in 1804; active in the War of 1812; clerk of the Court of Common Pleas for Hamilton County, 1792, and Clerk of the Supreme Court until 1818.
