Charles William Bishop papers

 Collection
Call Number: MS 930

Scope and Contents

A combined log book and journal kept by Charles William Bishop during the Civil War makes up this collection. Bishop was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1823, and died in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1870.

The volume, entitled "Log of a Cruise in the U.S. Gunboat 'Port-Royal,' Lieut. Geo. U. Morris Comdg.," covers the period May 1, 1862 through May 24, 1864, and details Bishop's experiences in the war during that period. Of particular interest is his eye-witness account of the sinking of the Cumberland by the Merrimac (see pages 151 and following), accompanied by poetry, newspaper clippings, and other papers about the battle.
