Scope and Contents
This collection is made up of business correspondence, 1935-1938, pertaining to the Franco-American Review, "a quarterly devoted to history, literature, and criticism," first published in June of 1936 in New Haven, Connecticut, and jointly edited by American and French scholars and critics. The Review ceased publication after the second year. Also in the collection is a printer's dummy of the first issue, autographed by several board members.
The correspondence is primarily that of Charles M. Fleischner, business manager for the Review, and concerns subscriptions and other financial matters as well as editorial policy and solicitation of articles. There are also several letters of Allen J. Barthold and Frank Monaghan, both of the editorial board.
This collection is only partially processed, the correspondence being roughly sorted alphabetically but otherwise unsorted. Newspaper clippings and printed material are mixed in with the letters.
The printer's dummy and the Barthold-Monaghan letters were given to Yale University by Allen J. Barthold in 1978. The provenance of the remaining papers is unknown.
