William F. Buckley, Jr., papers

 Collection
Call Number: MS 576
Scope and Contents

The William F. Buckley, Jr. Papers consist of more than five hundred linear feet of material. Papers relating to the publication of God and Man at Yale, files from Buckley's 1965 campaign for mayor of New York City, and his 1950 "Alumni Day Address" are open for research. All other material is closed to research.

The Mayoralty Campaign, 1965 (boxes 293-326) is composed of material used in or collected for Buckley's campaign for mayor of New York City in 1965. Buckley ran unsuccessfully on the Conservative Party ticket against John Lindsay. There are several boxes of correspondence mainly composed of letters of advice and criticism and letters from campaign contributors. The section also contains news releases, newspapers clippings, and a large number of miscellaneous subject and research files relevant to issues in the campaign.

Boxes 410-414 contain letters and scrapbooks concerning Buckley's God and Man at Yale (New York, Henry Regnery and Co., 1951). In this book, Buckley charged that Yale taught collectivism and Keynesian economics and that the overall atmosphere at Yale encouraged agnosticism. The correspondence consists of approximately 450 letters, largely dated between 1951 and 1954, from the public, and exchanges between Buckley and his publisher. A list of correspondents is included in this register. The files also contain scrapbooks of articles about the book.
