Biographical / Historical
The Yale Band's history begins in 1917, when Lt. Joseph Ellis first assembled a group of instrumentalists to do service for Yale College. Various groups of wind, brass, and percussion players presented concerts at Yale throughout the first half of the 20th century. The Yale Concert Band was formed in 1946 with the appointment of Keith L. Wilson, while the Yale Jazz Ensemble traces its official roots to the 1970s.
Forms part of the Record Group 9-E (YRG 9-E), Records documenting Yale College offices, programs, and projects.
