The Shelley project––commissioned by the Limited Editions Club in the United States in 1969 at the suggestion of John Dreyfus-- was printed in 1971 and reprinted by the Heritage Press in 1974. This was Shirley Smith's largest book project in terms of the number of commissioned wood engravings. He would later write, 'I think the word "masterpiece" originally referred to the piece of work, that divides the apprentice from the professional; in which case this was my "masterpiece" as regards engraving.'
