Scope and Contents
The Edward Robie Papers document his professional work. Almost all material is undated, but it could be presumed that the manuscripts span his pastoral career at Greenland, NH, 1852-1917. The collection includes an autobiography (1868), European travel journal (1896), letters (2 items), sermons (arranged by biblical text) addresses, unpublished literary manuscripts, and book reviews (arranged in alphabetical order).

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was given to Andover Newton Theological School by the Community Congregational Church of Greenland, New Hampshire in 1987 and transferred to the Yale Divinity Library in 2017.

Overview
The collection documents Robie's professional work at Andover Theological Seminary and as a Congregational minister in Greenland, New Hampshire from 1852 to 1917.
Biographical / Historical
Edward Robie was born in Gorham, Maine in 1821. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1840 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1843. He studied in Germany during the next three years, at the universities of Halle and Berlin. When he returned to the U.S. he taught ancient and modern languages at Gorham Academy, 1846-1848. He returned to Andover to become Librarian and Instructor of Sacred Literature at the Seminary, positions he held until 1851.
Robie was ordained to the Congregational ministry at Greenland, NH, on February 25, 1852 and remained as pastor of the Greenland church until his death in 1917.
