Collection
Call Number: VRC 141
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of photographs of Mexican Colonial art and architecture, with architecture the predominant subject. Most of the material are likely dated from the 1920s and 1930s and were purchased by George Kubler for Yale University from the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia y Historia, Mexico City. Some materials were purchased from the photographer, Joseph A. Baird, Jr. Deposited in the Visual Resources Department in 1983. 1,015 photographs, black and white, unmounted, 8 x 10 in., 5 x 7 in., 3 x 5 in, and some miscellaneous other sizes. All are marked on the back with identification in pencil or pen. Most of the photos are from the photo archive of the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia y Historia. All photos are of Mexican architecture (including period floor plans, interiors, exteriors, and details), painting, and sculpture. The photos in boxes 1-4 are 5 x 7 in., and all of Colonial architecture. These were from George Kubler’s office, and were deposited in the Visual Resources Collection on his retirement in 1983. He originally purchased them from I.N.A.H., but often with university funds. The I.N.A.H. photos were probably taken in the 1920s and 1930s. They are arranged into groups by state or city, interfiled, with the Mexico City group subdivided into types of buildings. The photos in box 5 are 8 x 10 in., and are from various sources, mostly purchased from Joseph Baird, the photographer, and taken in the 1950s and 1960s.
