Art and Architecture of China Slide Collection
Scope and Contents
(700-1) Paintings from Collections in the People’s Republic of China: Compiled from the slide collections of members of the Chinese Painting Delegation to the People’s Republic of China in 1977 (scholars included: Bush, Clapp, Fu, Cahill, Laing, and Wilson). Includes works viewed at exhibitions and special viewings at the Palace Museum, Beijing Historical Museum, and the Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Liaoning, and Zhejiang Museums. The collection originally comprised of 3,016 slides of 432 paintings. This set represents items not added to the circulating Yale slide collection. The individual slides are labeled with identification numbers that correspond to the identification numbers given in document entitled “Tabulation of Slides of Chinese Paintings” (dated January 15, 1978). This document, organized by museum and identification number, includes the title of work, artist (in Wade-Giles Romanization), and the name of photographer/s. Two letters written by James Cahill to fellow delegates about the Duplication Project are also enclosed. These documents are included in Container 1. Provenance: Purchase, ca. 1978, from China Slides Duplication Project (administered by University of California, Berkeley). Funded by Yale University Library and the East Asia Council. A smaller set of the collection was later distributed by Asian Art Photographic Distribution (AAPD, University of Michigan).
(700-2) National Palace Museum Slide Sets: Slides of calligraphy, ceramics, enamels, bronzes, ink seals, jade, kesi silk tapestry, wood, silver and lacquer works. Slides are individually marked with a museum registration number. A document included in Container 2 gives the identifying data for the works, including museum registration number, title and period information in Wade-Giles Romanization. Provenance: Purchase, ca. 1965, from the Photographic Archive from the Chinese National Palace and Central Museums (Department of the History of Art, University of Michigan).
(700-3) Asian Art Photograph Distribution (AAPD) Slide Sets: Chinese painting slides from various collections that were never added to the circulating Yale slide collection. Slides are labeled with AAPD identification numbers. 1. Note: General set of 521 slides purchased ca. 1980. 4. Chinese Painting from the Nelson Gallery, Purchase ca. 1980 21 slides, identification list of complete set included (Wade-Giles). Note: Total of 321 slides purchased ca. 1980. 5. Hung-jen Album, Purchase 8 slides 6. Yangtze Panorama from the National Palace Museum, Purchase ca. 2000 6 slides, Ming dynasty, anonymous painter 7. Master of the Lotus Garden: Life and Art of Bada Shanren, Purchase 1991 422 slides (complete set); identification list included (Pinyin). From exhibition held at Asian Art Museum (San Francisco) and Yale University Art Gallery in 1990-1991. Provenance: Purchases, ca. 1980-1991, from the Asian Art Photograph Distribution (AAPD), University of Michigan. Funded by Yale University Library and the East Asia Council.
(700-4) Wu Guanzhong Painting Slide Collection: Slides of paintings by Wu Guanzhong (1919- ). Individual slides labeled in English (Pinyin Romanization) with artist’s name, title of work, and plate information. Source unknown.
(700-5) Jade Studio Exhibition (YUAG) Slide Set: Slide set from the exhibition “The Jade Studio: Masterpieces of Ming and Qing Painting and Calligraphy from the Wong Nan-p’ing Collection” (held at the Yale University Art Gallery, ca. 1994.) Slides identified in English (Pinyin Romanization) on cardboard mounts with name of creator and identification number.
(700-6) Mu Xin Painting Slide Set: Slides of paintings by Mu Xin (1927- ) from the catalog to the exhibition “Mu Xin: Landscapes of the Mind” (held at the Yale University Art Gallery, October-December 2001). No cataloging information is given on the slides. Provenance: Slides requested by Richard Barnhart.
(700-7) Nanjing Architecture Slide Set: Slides of major architectural monuments in Nanjing, including Sun Yat-sen Memorial, Old City Gate, and Ming Tombs. No identification information is given on the slides.
(700-8) Ming Ceramics Slide Set: Slides of ceramics from the exhibition “In Pursuit of the Dragon: Traditions and Transitions in Ming Ceramics” (Seattle Art Museum, Exh. Cat.). Slides are labeled with illustration numbers that correspond to entries in the exhibition catalog.
(700-9) Bada Shanren Painting Slide Set: Slides of paintings by Bada Shanren (ca. 1626-1705) from various collections, including the Princeton University Art Museum, Kanaoka Yuzo Collection, Wang Fangyu and Sum Wai Collection, and Chen Wen Hsi Collection. Individual slides are labeled in English with the title of the work, collection name, and catalog reference number. Title of the catalog is unknown. Provenance: Slides made for Tom Wu for his lecture at a symposium on Bada Shanren. No documentation found.
