Scope and Contents: The Walker Family Papers (WA MSS 501) consist of drafts or copies of letters written by Elkanah Walker during the years 1839-54. Many of the letters are unsigned and unfinished. The collection also includes letters written to Elkanah and Mary Richardson Walker and a number of family papers. Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the life and work of Melvin Wittler, who was an American Protestant missionary in Turkey from 1956 to 1993, and provide insight into religious and political events in the Middle East. Wittler served as an administrator for the Near East Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and the United Church Board for World Ministries, overseeing the Mission's educational and medical work.
