Shipping collection
The collection consists of ships' journals, invoices, manifests, lists of crews, clearance papers and other documents relating to shipping, largely from Connecticut ports in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also a small quantity of papers from Massachusetts, New York and elsewhere.
Robert W. Simpson papers
Personal and business correspondence of Robert W. Simpson, ship's log, and business and financial papers concerning the voyages of the Carlyle before and during the Civil War.
Henchman S. Soule papers
Correspondence, account books, business papers, and ships' records, relating to the many commercial concerns and shipping ventures Henchman S. Soule and his brothers conducted from New Haven, Connecticut, including world voyages and investments in California gold exploration.
Sherwood Sterling papers
Chiefly the business records of four companies in which Sherwood Sterling was active. The most complete records are for the Sterling Grate Bar Company which manufactured furnace grates. Included are patents, legal and financial papers, and advertising. The other companies were engaged in mining in Alaska. Also included is printed matter from F. T. McIntyre describing his Hypnotic Ball Treatment for the cure of diseases and for psychic self-improvement.
Swift and Hine Company collection
The collection consists of correspondence, blotters, bills, daybooks, and legal papers of the Smith and Hine Company, a general store in Warren, Connecticut. The material mainly concerns the sale of groceries and dry goods.
Towner family papers
Diary, account book, financial and legal papers, and photocopies of material relating to the Towner and Tyler families of Branford, Connecticut. Solomon and Isaac Tyler's shipping interests and John Edwin Towner's Civil War diary are significant materials in the collection.
Townshend family papers
