Abstract:

This collection encompasses accessions of single letters and small groups of letters and other manuscripts pertaining to the history of Alaska, which the library has chosen to group and list as an artificial collection. Letters and documents discuss travel in Alaska, interactions with Native Alaskans, the Alaska gold rush, the fur industry, surveying, business operations, and naval service. Also includes one photograph of the U.S.S. Pinta.

Scope and Contents: The George Aust Papers consists of professional papers, legal and financial records, professional and personal correspondence, and other documents pertaining to the life and work of British civil servant George Aust. Aust’s papers document his career of over fifty years in government service, including his position as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1790 to 1796. Abstract:

The collection consists of documents, correspondence, and drawings by the English artist William Blake and his colleague John Linnell. Included are business and financial documents covering the relationship between Blake and Linnell, a letter from Blake to Linnell, two drawings by Blake, and a portrait of Blake by Linnell. The items were acquired by the library between 1941 and 1973.

George M. Davidson's diary and correspondence describe an 1849 overland trip to California. This material records the hardships of the journey, encounters with Indians, life in the California gold mines, and his establishment of a general store in Pine Grove. There are business records such as store inventories, bills from suppliers, a mining work ledger, bullion receipts, and informal certificates for mining shares in Butte County and Sierra counties, California.
