Scope Note: Representational drawings of scenes from the lives of 19th-century Plains Indians, with an emphasis on martial accomplishments. Ledger drawings were so named for the ruled ledger books in which they were often executed; these books were obtained from white soldiers or traders.

Indian ledger drawings by Koba and Etahdleuh Doanmoe

Abstract:

Ledger with drawings, sketches, and watercolors by Kiowa Indians Koba and Etahdleuh Doanmoe, circa 1878-1885, while they were students at the United States Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, or imprisoned at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida. The ledger includes twenty-three pages of artwork attributed to Koba, four pages attributed to Doanmoe, and two pages of unattributed work.

Abstract:

Ledger drawings created by Oglala Lakota artist Dwayne Wilcox, 2008-2018. The collection includes 48 titled drawings, which appear in his book, Visual/Language: The Ledger Drawings of Dwayne Wilcox (Staunton, Virginia: George F. Thompson Publishing, 2021), edited by Karen Miller Nearburg. One drawing has an inkjet print affixed to its recto. The collection also includes nine untitled drawings on versos, which are probably preparatory drawings for other work.

Abstract: Drawings and inkjet prints of drawings created by Lakota artists, 2008-2017, as well as art produced by others related to protests against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota, 2016-2019.
