The collection consists of art work, writings, notes and research papers, correspondence, printed material, motion picture film, art supplies, photographs and other related papers, documenting the D'Aulaires' creative process and collaborative work as authors and illustrators of children's books.

The writings and drawings document Lillian Hoban's career as a children's author and illustrator, including the Frances and Arthur books and her many collaborations with other authors including Miriam Cohen and Johanna Hurwitz. Audiovisual materials and born digital electronic media include interviews with Hoban and her then husband Russell Hoban.
