Abstract:

The materials consist of memorabilia, photographs, artifacts, and an engraving documenting Franklin Lindley Couch's (Yale 1917) extracurricular activities while a student at Yale. Included are materials documenting the Yale Courant staff, Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Calcium Light Night, and the Yale Field Artillery in World War I.

Paul Bowen Johnson papers

Letters and papers relating to the work of Paul Bowen Johnson, who was a captain in the Medical Corps, as Morale Officer for the Port of Embarkation, Newport News, Virginia, during World War I. Also in the papers is a history of the Morale Department and his own log of work between 1918-1919.

Labaree family papers

Abstract:

The principal figures in these papers are Benjamin Labaree and his wife, Eliza Paul Capen Labaree. Their papers consist of courtship letters and other correspondence (1831-1835), his autobiography written in 1879 and five of her school notebooks compiled while she was at the Ipswich Academy (ca. 1829-1830). Also in the papers is a sketchbook by James McIntosh, and a collection of family letters (1917-1919) edited by Leonard Woods Labaree and abridged by Rachel Capen Schauffler.

Cornelius Vanderbilt Papers

Abstract: Chiefly correspondence, memoranda, a notebook, and memorabilia relating to Vanderbilt's service as an officer in the U.S. Engineers during World War I. Also included are technical notebooks on mathematics, chemistry, and engineering (1897-1926). Of particular note are two illustrated manuscript volumes: one by Joseph Lyddell Peyton outlining a course of instruction for British naval officers, and the second by John Burnell showing the headlands of various coastlines in Europe and Africa....

Lewis Sheldon Welch Papers

Abstract:

The papers include correspondence, business records, printed matter, and photographs which document Lewis Sheldon Welch's business, civic, and Yale activities. Nearly half the papers concern Welch's investments in the Saddle Mountain Mining Company of Arizona. The papers also highlight Welch's role as an active Yale alumnus and his interests in New Haven civic affairs, civilian efforts to aid the military during World War I, and repeal of the Prohibition amendment.

Includes images of drilling instruction, exercises, and artillery practice. There are a few photographs of Yale students during the Spanish-American War.
