The papers consist of diaries (1779-1831) of Samuel Canby and 24 letters to James Canby from James Asheton Bayard, Outerbridge Horsey, Louis McLane and Samuel White. Also included is a copy of the agricultural almanac for 1819 annotated by Samuel Canby.

Correspondence, journal, speeches and miscellanea of William F. Shunk and his family. Shunk exchanged letters with family members in Pennsylvania while sailing around the world, circa 1846-1849. The sloop, Preble, stopped in many ports, including Cape Verdes, Rio de Janiero, Hawaii, Hong Kong, and Canton, China. Speeches of his father, Francis Rawn Shunk, governor of Pennsylvania, are also included.

Abstract:

Chiefly letters written to William Stewart, lawyer and politician, who was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and subsequently a Republican member of Congress from Pennsylvania (1857-1861). The letters, which antedate his service in Congress, are largely from his in-laws, Charles and Moses Sullivan, who were themselves State Senators in Pennsylvania.
